Overrated Bands

There are two bands which are super overrated. I feel it is my duty as a musician that I let everyone know.

The first band on my list is 311. What the !@#$ is so great about these guys. They blend in reggae, rap, and some rock and fuse it into their music. People I talk to like these guys, but truthfully they suck.

The next one is My Chemical Romance. I listen to these guys every once in awhile. Here's my problem with them. All there songs sound alike and they put too much distortion into their songs. Live performances I have heard are not that great because they overpower the vocals with the instruments so the end product is garbled sound. My Chemical Romance is listenable, but get very old, very fast. I would rather listen to The Used, better songs and variations, better live performances.

ROCK- N'-ROLL!

I'm probably going to get flamed for this.

you called this so i'll just say i'm flagging that. U2 is a good band. i'm not a huge fan, but i listen to them on occation. that song 'new year's day' has been getting a lot of airtime on the radio and it gets stuck in my head everytime.

another band that i think is overrated is the Eagles. 'hotel california' is not a good song.

OH YEA!
Well, I'll do you one better.
I agree with you about the Eagles.

Jingle Bells gets stuck in my head. It doesn't help that one of the clowns I work with has the insane habit of whistling it for no particular reason.

while on the subject of overrated bands, i might get shot for this.

Pink Floyd is slightly overrated. beak tried to get me into them awhile ago so i bought 'dark side of the moon'. in my opinion the only good song on the album is money. however, recently i listened to 'the wall' and loved the double album.

so i guess i should say that 'dark side of the moon' is overrated, not necessarily Pink Floyd.

Bang, Bang, Bang!

Dark Side of the Moon, remained on Billboard's 200 album chart for 15 years straight and then for another two when it was remastered back in 1994. It is the most successful album ever produced with upwards of 40 million copies sold.

For a very brief period of time, Michael Jacksons, Thriller, overtook it but Dark Side just keeps on selling.

*I love the damned thing!

(Disclaimer)
*While I am not an 'actual' burn-out, some argument can be made that I am slightly overdone.

album sales mean nothing to me-- rap sells tons of records, yet its crap.

i'm calling you out, i think AC/DC's 'Back In Black' has sold more than 'Dark Side Of The Moon.'

aside from certain greatest hits albums, some of the greatest albums are:

1.) 'Back In Black'
2.) 'Highway To Hell'
3.) 'Powerage'
4.) 'Black Album'
5.) 'Master Of Puppets'
6.) '...And Justice For All'
7.) 'Break The Cycle'
8.) 'The Artist In The Ambulance'
9.) 'Full Collapse'
10.) 'War All The Time'
11.) 'Sonic Brew'
12.) '1919 Eternal'
13.) 'The Blessed Hellride'

I personally think KISS is completely overrated. I can't stand their songs. They sound like crap on steroids. I know this isn't popular to say but Nirvana is completely overrated. Alice in Chains and Soundgarden were out and playing truly good music long before Nirvana hit the scene. Nirvana never really contributed much to music besides popularizing the power-chord-only song. I mean: how hard is it to make a song completely from power chords? I have a lot more to say about Nirvana, but I'd probably get people even more pissed off at me so I'll stop now.

Other people I feel are OR: I think M. Jackson's always been overrated, Celine Dion, Bette Midler (ugh), Aerosmith, any current band that is playing stuff that anyone could have heard in the early 90's. There are many more but could probably fill a book.

DM, In the US you are probably right. I get different results in different places.

According to one site:

1 54 26 00.0 THRILLER Michael Jackson (1983)
2 42 19 00.0 BACK IN BLACK AC/DC (1980)
3 41 27 00.0 GREATEST HITS 1971-75 The Eagles (1976)
4 40 15 00.0 SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER Soundtrack (1978)
5 37 17 11.7 THE BODYGUARD Soundtrack (1992)
6 37 14 00.0 BAT OUT OF HELL Meat Loaf (1978)
7 35 15 06.3 THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON Pink Floyd (1973)

In others it said that Dark Side had sold over 40 mil and I can't imagine that, Saturday Night fever, The Bodyguard soundtrack and Bat Out of Hell, sold more than Dark Side.

Wikipedia says, "DSotM is the second-best-selling album of all time, worldwide, and the 8th-best-selling album in the United States."
Then their list shows it as #17

Then later on... "Since it was first released, it has sold over 35 million copies worldwide as of 2004. Its sales surpassed those of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" in late 2003"
Their list shows Thriller at #1

Wikipedia, showing the world that intelligence isn't collective, one piece of disinformation at a time.

Originally I was using some reviews from Amazon.

I'm totally crushed!
I'll get even.
;^)

Manymany,
I've always had a problem with people, that only perform other peoples stuff, being set up as some kind of great contributors to music.

After Aerosmiths return, they should have been satisfied with a good comeback, then retired. But then they would have all ODed by now.

many many:

FLAGGED! nirvana is a great band. i said before, Dave Grohl is my idol.

kiss i dont know enough of their stuff to make a call. alice in chains is alright, as well as soundgarden. bush was a great band. everyone you said in your second paragraph does suck, especially Aerosmith.

warren:

i found out AC/DC toppled them from an english teacher of mine who plays music for a living aside from teaching. i have yet to find a truly reliable source though for this info.

i think you underestimate 'Bat Out Of Hell' and 'Saturday Night Fever'. very popular albums. i can't believe The Eagles (aka not good music) made it at #3.

Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' is a truly great album. i still want to know why 'Dark Side..' did better on the charts.

Sheer longevity if nothing else, Dark Side was first released in 1973. quite a few people that bought The Wall will later buy Dark Side.

Dark Side has a 9 year head start and The Wall has such a dark theme, it turns off many people.

warren:

i'm gonna disagree with you about the theme turning people away from the music. just look at Metallica's 'Master of Puppets', '...And Justice For All', and 'Black Album'. each went multi-platinum and are three insanely great albums of all time. there is no doubt in my mind that they will forever be listened to.

I want to know from firsthand Pink Floyd fans, which album is greater, in terms of musical content and overall sound.

Oh well, I am a first hand Pink Floyd fan. I like The Wall better. Content, sound and overall concept is a build on Dark Side.

I own the original on vinyl, the digitally remasterd CDs and the re-released sound track with the extra tracks and the movie on VHS and DVD.

The original vinyl sounds best, it just sounds warmer.

Many people I know tell me they don't like it because of the dark theme. They take it personally because it is a concept album based on the life of one character. My brothers hate it, (but then again, they are a couple of putzes). I think they empathize with the alienation theme and are disturbed by the decent into insanity. They don't realize that the destruction of the wall is an allegory of redemption.

I own almost all of their albums made after 1969, (I don't like Ummagooma, I find the free-form Jazz nerve racking).

1970 - Atom Heart Mother
1971 - Meddle
1972 - Obscured by Clouds
1973 - The Dark Side of the Moon
1975 - Wish You Were Here
1977 - Animals
1979 - The Wall
1983 - The Final Cut
1987 - A Momentary Lapse of Reason
1988 - Delicate Sound of Thunder
1994 - The Division Bell
1995 - Pulse

The Wall, is my favorite, Dark Side is second, Animals and A Momentary Lapse of Reason tie for third....

Do I qualify? lol
Somewhere around here I have a VHS of the live Momentary Lapse concert.

I went to a dedicated light show featuring The Wall, it was probably the most intense sensory entertainment I have ever encountered.

When the "short" "Goodbye Cruel World" played, a small gun slowly tumbled off in the distance on the main screen, the gun slowly tumbled toward the front, growing larger and filling the screen, and as the last bye bye was sung the barrel centered on the audience, a flash bomb went off and every light strobed...

As everyone realized they hadn't actually been shot, they relaxed and you could hear every chair in the auditorium, go, CREAK! Its a wonder that they didn't all go over backwards! LOL!

warren:

you proved my point that 'The Wall' is better. my guitar teacher likes 'Animals' best because he says the solos are the whole song and each song is long (i wouldn't know, i have never listened to it). although you and he have the same #2 album in 'Dark Side'.

sounds like the show ended with a bang.

Your guitar teacher sounds like a man of impeccable taste! LOL

Honestly, the guitar solos are the reason I like Animals. They might be a tad slow for your tastes, (I don't know).

i'll have to download some stuff.

if my guitar teacher likes the solos, chances are i will (we have similiar tastes). i've been listening to Children Of Bodom a lot recently because Alexi Leiho is a beast, his solos are insane on guitar and he writes mind boggling keyboard solos as well. he's a tour de force. blues solos arent particularly fast, but they have their moments.

Dave Grohl is the man and the reason why of all the bands i like, the Foo Fighters are my favorite.

Just so you know, I will not tolerate bad-mouthing Pink Floyd on my blog. And DSotM is their best album. Listen to it as it was meant to be listened to, from start to finish without interruption, while chilling out. Anyone who owns a copy of Dark Side of the Moon that skips over songs or just listens to one song is not doing it right and they should pass their CD to someone who deserves it on their way to slashing their wrists in a bathtub for being a loser.

Not that I'm opinionated or anything.
