A Great Band

If you have never heard of Dream Theater, get the albums A Change Of Seasons, Awake, and Train Of Thought. The musicianship of this band is impeccable-- John Petrucci on guitar and Mike Portnoy on drums and percussion is a winning combination. The rest of the band only enhances the listening pleasure.

One song I have come to love and admire is the seven part, 23+ minute "A Change Of Seasons". This song I got a few years ago on a mix and thought it was alright. The more my taste broadened for good music, the more open minded I became. Finally I popped the mix into my computer and listened to the song again a week and a half ago. This song is probably the only 23 minute song that can keep the listener on the edge of their seat. The flow of each part is smooth, the instrumentals are mindboggling, the vocals are powerful. Everything works with no odd parts, something which seems very rare nowadays.

I can rant on and on about Dream Theater, but I don't think my praise can do them justice. Experience the skilled and mastered craft of great music NOW!

ROCK ON!

I definitely agree that Dream Theater is great. I never would have given them a listen if not for my instructor when I was younger. They have an almost innate ability to generate beautiful and well-crafted music. I would love to see them live but I don't think they ever come to my area of the country.

they are one of those bands who has a super devoted underground following yet are very popular, especially among musicians.

dude, you have got to come to Jersey. They played at least 2 shows here- one at the PNC Arts Center and the other was on the Gigantour with Symphony X, Megadeth, and a lot others. unfortunately i missed them both- damn work.

its true, today's casual listener has an extremely low patience. but there is a secret following of bands among musicians. most musicians will tell you they know bands like Dream Theater and like the music to be intricate, tough to play, and long (provided it goes with the song)

i dont think i have listened to any dream theatre before. i will try to if i get the chance. but yeah, what you guys were saying about song lengths is so very true. i think the average music listener has been so accustomed to the conventional hit em out in 3.50 minute songs, anything more is just beyond them. its soo sad. but then you have the people that understand and appreciate the skill. like when i saw joanna newsome, she played this 15 min epic and the audience was with her all the way and completely enthralled. it was really beautiful to be a part of. thank god for people like that.

songs throughout the time kept getting shorter and shorter until finally the norm is approx. 3:15. this is why i say that Dream Theater is unconventional yet they make the perfect songs. i hope i get the chance to see them play live.

Zakk Wylde when i saw him in April played what felt like a 15 min song which he dedicated to Dimebag. that whole concert was like a religious revival for me, so i can relate to your experience somewhat.
