Top Shredders Of All Time
The last topic was great, but now I have an even more difficult question:
*****Name the top three (3) shredders of all time*****
My picks in order:
3.) Angus Young
2.) Jimi Hendrix
1.) John Petrucci
If you've never heard of John Petrucci, you are a deprived rock fan.

14 Comments:
Depends on what you mean.
Composed and orchestrated or spontaneous and creative.
I think Hendrix takes top billing in either catigory.
Composed:
3. Brian May of Queen
2. Jimmie Page of Led Zeppelin
Spontaneous:
3. Although I'm not a big AC/DC fan, Angus Young
2. Jeff Beck
There are so many, its really hard for me to asign numbers.
Thanks for turning me on to John Petrucci. I may shorty be changing those numbers around. :^)
warren:
i like Hendrix a lot and apparently you do as well. i put him as number 2 because he was so innovative as to what rock has become.
if you are going for spontaneous i think i would put Trey Anastasio somewhere on the list.
i you want, i'll try and post up some Petrucci.
i have to go to school now, but i'll be back later.
warren's post:
Thank you DM, but right after I saw the name I went to the "Dream Theater" web site and found links to about 2 hours worth of MP3s.
I first heard May back in the days of vinyl. I was in a electronics shop looking at turntables and the saleman was using Queens first album as a demo record.
I didn't buy the turntable but I did go to the record shop and bought the album.
Queen released many records and I bought a few, but the first has always been my favorite.
warren:
i had to post your other comment. this is the second time this has happened where i get your comment in my e-mail, but don't see it here.
May and Page are good guitarists. both are part of some of the best bands in history. you can make a good arguements for both.
elijah:
Angus Young is the man.
***********************************
i have quite a few runners up which include: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Kirk Hammett, Randi Rhoads, Trey Anastasio, Yngwie Malmsteen, Zakk Wylde
DM, It wasn't just here.
AOW said the same thing happened to her blog with one of the Beaks posts and other people were complaining about the same thing.
Earlier, I wasn't able to access any blogspot blogs and I am still getting the message "Forbidden
You don't have permission to access / on this server." on Beaks blog.
elijah and warren:
something was definately wrong. warren's comment was the second in a week to now show up. his first that didn't was i think on high voltage, but i could me mistaken.
last night i couldn't get to beak's blog, because of that same 403 message (forbidden), but today i was able to get to beak's and high voltage.
hopefully they fixed everything. i wonder if they got hacked or something.
Changes to the Matrix means an Agent is near. I thought you knew that Warren.
DM, you didn't leave out any guitarists I would have listed, except perhaps Alex Lifeson.
beamish:
"Changes to the Matrix means an Agent is near."
lol.
i know there's probably a few more that i am forgeting to put up. if i can think of them, i'll put them on. i give credit where credit is due.
i just thought of another great musician- Alexi Leiho from Children Of Bodom.
sorry - i was on my way to another neighborhood and as i was passing through, thought i'd put my top three in:
clapton, beck and page of
clapton, beck and page fame
if you'd asked for four - the fourth would definitely be stevie ray. of course, some of these guys give les paul the credit - so really shredding is in the eyes of the beholder.
my own stepdad (74 years old) is a drummer and has been playing since the age of five - he is hot, hot, hot and still gets asked to gigs (do they still call them that?) later days guys!
nanc:
Clapton is good, but not Hendrix good in my opinion.
tell your stepdad to keep rockin. drumming is awesome and i can't wait for my finger to heal up so i can play again.
what kind of work does he do, for example studio recording, house bands? has he worked with famous musicians? what style music?
btw, they are still called gigs.
he's semi-retired and just plays house gigs. he grew up in a musical family - his aunt married into the teagarden family - jack of the slide trombone, his brother cub a drummer (later a big shot of kennicott copper mines in utah) who was married to his aunt, a vaudeville dancer. we had musicians in our home jamming at all times when i was young until all hours of the morning.
all three of our children are musicians, the oldest is a praise and worship leader and plays at least 10 instruments including an axe and her children all play woodwinds and brass. our two youngest play clarinet, trumpet, alto sax, piano and organ - although not all mastered.
when the grandkids come in the summer, you can imagine what this mountaintop sounds like! there is no thing greater. best to you in your endeavors.
clapton and hendrix are different good, yet equal in many respects - carlos santana is one of the sweetest.
elijah:
i probably should have mentioned Stevie Ray, but you took care of that.
i have never heard of his rendition of "Voodoo Child" though. my favorite Hendrix tune is a Bob Dylan cover- "All Along The Watchtower", which of course Jimi made his own by adding his sound.
Kerry King-Slayer
Larry lalonde-Possesed/Primus
trey spruance-Mr.Bungle/SC3/one FNM album.
